Inception: All it’s dreamt up to be?
I watched Christopher Nolan’s Inception this evening and just had to come home and write about it.
Being a huge fan of Nolan’s previous work, particularly The Dark Knight, (and yes, heavily due to Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker) I had been excited at both a new Nolan flick and the new concept that the film was tapping into, judging by the trailers and previews. So, granted, I went in with high expectations…
…I sit here disappointed nonetheless.
The film wasn’t awful and obviously aesthetically stunning, (any film that isn’t nowadays automatically goes into the dump pile, it seems) but I found myself caring more about Nolan’s approach to the ‘dream’, rather than the story that gave this idea life. Once the principles of inception had been explained, I was hanging on to aesthetics just as much as Joseph Gordon-Levitt was hanging on to the hotel fixtures and fittings.
To my recollection, I don’t think it was ever so bad that actors were clutching at straws with the story, but Leonardo DiCaprio has produced better work. Without doubt. Numerous times. Part of me wonders whether this is because the script on its own may not have given the actor enough to create some tangible depth to his character. You can find out more about how this is necessary for an actor by clicking here.
Admittedly, these are immediate ramblings after viewing the film. Maybe my thoughts will be more favorable in the morning. Let’s just hope those thoughts aren’t slipped into my subconscious by someone.
Richard.
